STI - Viral infections
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are diseases caused by harmful bacteria or viruses. These infections are transmitted through unsafe sexual contact.
Genital herpes and genital warts are diseases caused by a virus. Genital warts often start small. They gradually grow larger and spread. They are usually painless, but can sometimes itch. In some cases, herpes can cause painful, burning blisters. These blisters appear on the skin and mucous membranes around the genital area. You may also experience a fever, muscle aches, or a general feeling of being unwell. Both viruses remain in the body permanently, meaning they can return even after treatment. You can reduce the symptoms, discomfort, and risk of transmission with tablets or cream. There is a vaccine for genital warts, which also protects against several types of HPV (human papillomavirus). The HPV virus can cause cervical cancer.
Where do herpes and warts occur?
You can catch herpes and warts anywhere in the world, including the Netherlands. The risk of infection is often higher when you are far from home and out of your daily routine. Therefore, good education and preventive measures are essential, especially when travelling abroad on business.
What are the symptoms?
- Itch, pain, and/or a burning sensation around the genital area
- Warts or blisters
- With herpes: fever or feeling unwell
How to prevent herpes and warts?
Unsafe sex always carries the risk of contracting an STI. If you have sex with individuals from other countries, the risk of getting other STIs may be greater than in the Netherlands. It is important to protect yourself and your sexual partners from STIs. You can do this by practicing safe sexual contact, for example, by using condoms and avoiding risky sexual techniques. Be honest with your sexual partners and inform them if you have been diagnosed with an STI.
