The Gambia is a country in Africa that consists of a narrow strip along the Gambia River. It is about 250 kilometres long and only a few kilometres wide, making The Gambia the smallest country on the African mainland. To the west lies the Atlantic Ocean, and the country is completely surrounded by Senegal. The Gambia has a tropical savanna climate, which is characterised by a dry season and a wet season. The dry season lasts from around mid-October to mid-June.
