Svalbard, formerly known as Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen, is an archipelago that belongs to Norway and is located in the Arctic Ocean, north of the Norwegian mainland. It consists of three main islands and around eighty smaller ones. Jan Mayen is a Norwegian volcanic island located in the Arctic Ocean, with no permanent population. It consists of two parts linked by a narrow isthmus. The islands have a tundra climate, characterised by cold temperatures all year round, ranging from -12 to 9 degrees Celsius. Rainfall occurs throughout the year, including both rain and snowfall. The changing weather conditions can also lead to sudden snowdrifts and strong winds. Overall, the climate is unpredictable and harsh.
