North America
The health risks on this page pertain to the following North American countries: Canada, The United States and Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
The likelihood of running up a food poisoning infection, including hepatitis A, is small.
No particular risks, except for diseases transmitted by ticks, mainly in heavily wooded areas.

You can contract sexually transmitted diseases here, including hepatitis B and HIV infections, but not on a large scale.

Central America
The health risks on this page pertain to the following Central American countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.
The likelihood of running up a food poisoning infection depends to a very large extent on the local circumstances. The same applies to hepatitis A. For longer stays there is a risk of contracting typhoid fever.
You can catch malaria in many central American countries; the further south you go the greater the risk. In many countries dengue periodically causes large epidemics. You will only encounter yellow fever in the south of Panama.
Tuberculosis is still endemic to this region.
Sexually transmitted diseases, including hepatitis B and HIV infections, are commonplace.
A fluctuating risk of leptospirosis, which can be contracted though contact with infected water (swimming, diving, rafting, etc.).

South America (temperate)

You can only catch malaria and yellow fever in a few regions here. Dengue is possible and it sometimes causes large epidemics.

Many animals, both wild and domesticated, are infected with rabies. For longer stays, or in cases of specific exposure, vaccination can be a sensible option.

South America (tropical)
The likelihood of running up a food poisoning infection depends to a very large extent on the local circumstances. The same applies for hepatitis A. For longer stays there is also a risk of contracting typhoid fever.
Malaria is endemic to the whole Amazon Basin. The risks are particularly great for journeys to the tropical rainforest (the interior). The same applies for yellow fever. In many countries dengue occasionally causes large-scale epidemics.
Tuberculosis is still endemic to this region.
Sexually transmitted diseases, including hepatitis B and HIV infections are commonplace.
There is a fluctuating risk of leptospirosis. In tropical South America there is also a local risk of schistosomiasis (bilharzia). These diseases can be contracted through contact with infected water (swimming, diving, rafting, etc.).
