Flu (influenza) is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus.
How do you contract the flu?
Flu, also known by its full name influenza, is a respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. If you have the flu it means your airways have become infected by the influenza virus. Most people who contract the flu present mild complaints.
What are the symptoms?
After contracting the flu you will feel poorly within a few hours. The symptoms are:
- Headache
- Muscle ache
- Cold shivers
- Coughing
- Fever
Incidentally, you can experience flu-like feelings will many other illnesses, so they don’t always mean that you actually have the flu.
How can you avoid getting the flu?
Try to avoid infection:
- touch your nose and mouth as little as possible
- use paper tissues
- wash your hands frequently with soap and water

It’s best to get your jab between October and January, because the flu season can run from October well into the New Year.
